Shantak-bird by Mara999 Shantak-bird by Mara999
There are many strange creatures in H.P. Lovecrafts story "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath", one of which is the dreaded Shantak-bird and Randolph Carter is one of the few mortal humans who has seen one and lived. The Shantaks are larger than elephants and are at the top of the food chain in the Cold Waste of Earth's Dreamland, where they serve the evil Nyarlathotep.

The Shantaks are described as having heads similar to horses, which I chose to interpret in a relatively literal manner. That's why I've made the Shantak look a bit like a reverse hippogriff.

"The shantak-bird's sides are scaled and very slippery."  Dreamlands creatures are definitely bizarre, there is room for inspiration. :)

I think you've made it too fluffy, as the creature was very specificly described to have scales.

Still, a cool interpretation and I'm eager to see more Lovecraft's monsters by you :)

Thanks! It's true, it's not as slimy as how Papa Lovecraft describes them. I had tried to make it look more mangy and diseased, but the pen had a mind of its own :P

It's cool anyway.:) I personally always envisioned them in style of vultures or condors, with body covered with scales and naked head and neck:D
