The Balrog of Moria by Mara999 The Balrog of Moria by Mara999
The Fellowship has been pursued through Moria all the way to the bridge of Khazad-dum. Then the orcs and trolls grow silent when "Durin's Bane" enters the fray.

Whether Balrogs have wings or not, I opt for them having wings simply for the coolness-factor. When I read the books I pictured them being almost like living shadows, being able to use existing shadows to morph their own bodymass and shape, which is why I haven't drawn any clear wings yet in this picture.

This is really wonderful! It perfectly captures the kind of Tolkien visuals I grew up with.

Amazing in my opinion, one of the best pictures that does not look exactly like the Jackson version!

"Something was coming up behind them. What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape maybe, yet greater; and a power and terror seemed to be in it and to go before it."
--J. R. R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

I love the composition in this, with the dark foreground drawing focus to the brightly lit shadows beyond. great interpretation :)

Thank you. I'm in part inspired by how the scene was shot in Ralph Bakshi's movie, even though it's rather poorly executed, but it made an impression on me when I first saw it at the age of four.

That's the way I like them. Like Peter Jackson I picture many of the trolls as being dim-witted animalistic creatures that have simply "fallen in with the wrong crowd" :P

Thank you! I just wanted to show the great fear the goblins have for their dark ally.
